Topic: Should more be done to protect against natural disaster?
POINTS： ●Evacuation ●Research funding ●Technology ●Prediction ●Cooperation between industry and academia ●International cooperation
In recent years, the world has experienced a series of truly devastating natural disasters that have taken many lives and triggered unprecedented economic losses. These events:earthquake in Japan, Hurricane in the United States, have demonstrated that even the most wealth and well prepared countries can see large-scale damage and destruction when natural disasters strike. At this point, it is doubtful that the protection against natural hazards is enough.
What is required of today's meteorological industry is precise prediction by utilizing technology. With the global spread of mobile phone and networks, this technology is now increasingly used for data correction of weather by individuals. Therefore, experts can predict clearly localized downpour and other climate anomalies.
International corporation is a need of improvement for these systems. There is a huge gap between developed countries and emerging countries in predicting and protecting from natural disasters financially and technologically. The sheer volume of data from all over the world can reduce casualty by making people evacuate when these events hit.
In conclusion, it is evident that we are not well prepared for rare extreme events. These systems are not still working properly.People's awareness and education are not sufficient. Therefore, more protection is necessary for reducing risk against natural disaster.
