2008年度第1回(2008年6月実施) TOPIC：Agree or disagree: The use of nuclear power should be expanded
POINTS： ●Demand for electricity ● Disposal of nuclear waste ● Global warming ●Price of oil ●Renewable energy ●Safety
Although bolstering nuclear power operation seems to be one way of reducing global warming I still disagree with the usage of nuclear power.
First of all, nuclear plants are not safe. Despite a generally high security standard, accidents can still occur like what happened in Fukushima Power Plant and Chernobyl in Russia. Once it happens, it would be absolutely devastating both for human being and as for the nature it's going to affect it for a long time. It's been over 25 years since the Chernobyl incident happened and the effect can still be seen.
Disposal of nuclear waste is another problem. During the operation of nuclear sites, radioactive waste is produced. It will be toxic for thousands of years. In addition, the most of current proposals for dealing with industrial wastes is burying it in the deep underground sites, where it should be surrounded by rocks. There are few places to meet these requirements in all over the world.
Finally, it is a common notion that atomic energy is cheaper but in reality the cost of building atomic power plants are expensive while installation expenditures of renewable energy are less costly. As a result of technology development , installing alternative energy facilities require much less than fusion power. Moreover, the energy source for nuclear power is Uranium, it is a scarce resource and does not last forever. What is going to happen to countries who solely depend on atomic power if Uranium is already gone?
Considering all above factors, I believe that fission power should be halted. All the effort for expanding nuclear plant should be made to developing the sustainable energy.
