TOPIC： Agree or disagree: Electronic voting should be promoted
POINTS： ●Costs ●Security ●Efficiency ●Voting rate ●Generation gap ●Wrongdoing
Technology has remarkably progressed in various spectrum and even space elevator will be completed in the near future. However, mechanization has not yet been introduced in the area of voting in many countries. In this regard, the substantial benefits brought about by hi-tech can't be ignored.
The most important reason lies in voting rate. Online voting can beef up turnout. Although voting is a fundamental action of democracy, many people do not vote because some are unavailable due to working and others are reluctant to cast a ballot due to distance to the polling station. On the other hand, using the Internet ballots from the comfort of their home is accessible for many, especially for the disabled or injured who have difficulty to access the polls. Thus voter turnout can increase.
Another reason has to do with costs. Regarding traditional system, renting, manning and equipping the polling stations in every constituencies are costly and the tax revenue is usually allocated for that reason. Moreover, printing materials related to elections tend to be expensive and wasteful. Conversely, advanced system does not need for preparing them and voter can see candidates on website. It is rather economical.
Finally, electronic methods are efficient. Once elections returns are started to tally up, the result will be publicized almost immediately. In addition, it is easy for candidates to introduce their political activities and policies by utilizing the internet. Citizen can also easily get information about politicians. Therefore online voting is performant.
For the above reasons, I believe that electronic voting should be promoted. In this way, voting systems will advance significantly and this would make people get interested in politics.
