TOPIC：Do the world's wilderness areas need to be better protected?
POINTS： Biodiversity Ecotourism Rights of indigenous peoples Population growth Economic development International cooperation
Hiking and other outdoor activities have come into style for years. With its growing popularity, the awareness of environmental issues has been increasing dramatically as well. On the contrary, many companies have destroyed wilderness areas around the world. Thus, this shift should be halted.
A drastic growth of world population has taken a toll on a broad area of primeval forests. Some of human activities have direct effect on species. As a result, vast amount of species is now threatened with extinction. Now, other environmental problems such as climate change and pollution, have put a serious strain on the diversity of species on Earth. Since ecosystems and their species perform important biological services, conserving them is extremely imperative. For instance, green plants remove carbon dioxide and release oxygen into the atmosphere. Some animals, birds and insects serve as pollinators of food plants. They bring a great benefits for mankind. Yet from a different point of view,Promoting ecotourism and educating the public about value of biodiversity also lead to protect the environment. These activities raise awareness about their surrounding and it shows how tightly the nature and human being connect each other.
As a rusalt of aforementioned reasons, protecting wildness area is our obligation:adapting a proper countermeasure to population explosion, conservation of biodiversity, raising people's awareness by accelerating ecotourism. If not, we will end up losing substantial economical value in resources.
2011年度2回(2011年10月実施) TOPIC： Is too much emphasis put on work in modern society?
Business culture Family relations Global competition Health Materialism Temporary employment
Since people have kept up vociferous calls for balance work and family for years, work attitude has been changing slightly especially among young people. Some put their priority on family and hobby, not work. However, there are still tendency toward putting emphasis on work.
Firstly, global competition, caused by the new trend toward overseas expansion runs workers off their feet recently. To keep up with multinational giant companies, employees are force to work harder and harder. Some of them have to do overtime until midnight, even worse inadequate holiday. They are obviously consumed by their incredible hard work and end up spending lots of their holiday sleeping all day.
This has a negative impact on their health and family relationship. Tiredness from working long hours creates stress and is damaging motivation to go out with their family. As a result, workers themselves and their family members would get stressed out. Prolonged work sometimes causes grave health issues, if the worst happen, death from overwork. Many trials against death by overwork every year show this problem is fairly major.
For this reason, strong competition of business around the world is the major thing why people prioritize their job. And in addition, the diversification of employment patterns such as temporary employment and part time job changes their attitude towards work. With this situation that we are encountering, it would be beneficial for the society if government would make laws to make sure that employees won’t be overworked and that society would choose their family over their work since the main reason that they work is for them to feed their family and not the other way around.
Therefore, I hope workers in the future would enjoy their spare time actively, have a lot of bonding with family members and not just release stress from work when they have their free time. This would create a well-balanced and healthy family relationship.
TOPIC： Is society doing enough to deal with violent crime? 2008年度2回(2008年10月実施)
POINTS： Banning weapons Economic causes of crime School education Stricter punishments Surveillance cameras The influence of the media
Every single day, depressing violent crime has happened around the world, and the incident was sensationalized in media to draw attention. It seems people are just terrified and raising voice against the status quo. In reality, lots of measures have been taken effectively.
One of them is associated with stricter punishments. There are still capital punishment in some countries despite movement for abolishment of it.This penalty serves as a deterrent to committing serious crimes. In addition, governments moved to toughen law about a felonious crime. The decreasing crime rate followed.
Surveillance cameras also work as a countermeasure. Cities around the country have been installing camera systems in recent years. A survey shows that this technology aids efforts to prevent crime and apprehend criminals. High apprehension rate results in reducing anxiety about heinous crimes.
Banning weapons is effective as well. It is strictly prohibited for people to carry weapons in many countries, including in some places where citizens are allowed to have them under license. This law would control murder rate.
For these reasons, it is obvious that society is doing enough to deal with violent crime. However, we should not be complacent with steps that have bee taken for these problems. For better life, We need to take more strong measure to combat serious crimes.
2015年１回（６月） TOPIC:Should cloning research be promoted, or should it be discontinued?
points: endangered species ethics financial costs food supply medical applications risks
It has past approximately 20 years since Jurassic Park has show up. At that time, the story seemed to be unrealistic. Thanks to development of technology, however, it might be possible to see dinosaurs in zoo. We could reproduce endangered species and organ transplant using cloning techniques. This can seem to be very interesting, amazing and advantageous however, cloning research should be halted for the following reasons: The biggest concern is related to ethics. Clone technology in animals can lead to human cloning. Further, this can be used in the field of organ donation. Instead of waiting for donor, they can utilize their own clone. In this case, cloned human being were generated only for the organ donors. In a movie, it is shown that the counterpart clone of a person was just killed inhumanely for the real person to get his or her organ.
In addition, cloned animals have some risks: high failure rate, aging faster, and causing cancer. In the past they tried to combine the tiger and a lion, which they called a liger but it turns out that it couldn’t live long. According to some researches, scientists show that there are some risks, but they don't figure out the reasons and solutions yet.
Finally, financial costs are considerably great in this field while there are few successes. Only one cloning dog allegedly costs 18 million yen. Even though this could be practical use for human being, still it can be costly. Therefore, availability is limited for the rich people.
For all the above reasons, cloning researches should be ceased although there might be beneficial effects on human being, this technology can change our moral value completely. Therefore we should give careful thought to use it.
2013年度1回(2013年6月実施) TOPIC： Do multinational corporations play a positive role in today’s world?
・Consumers ・Cultural diversity ・Human rights ・Jobs ・Tax revenue ・The environment
The number of multinational corporations has been increasing rapidly. It is undeniable fact that it would affect residents in good and bad way. However, the benefits surely outweigh the disadvantage for the following reasons.
The most important reason is related to job opportunities. Global companies create wealth and livelihood around the world. They usually offer not only stable jobs but also family benefits. Therefore, the workers' quality of life improve dramatically compared with working at local small farms.
Moreover, the more multinational corporations gain profits, the more tax revenue increases in the countries since lots of developing countries are struggling against income because of the lack of industries. At this point, giant companies contribute substantial benefits to governments and local citizens.
Their size and scale of operations also enables consumers to receive lower average cost and prices, ensuring that there is a minimum standard of product quality. Moreover, purchasers can obtain international foods and goods without leaving their countries. Therefore, their products can add comfort to people's life worldwide.
With all the reasons mentioned above, I think MNCs are unfailingly beneficial to the world. Their contribution to the world economy will be beefed-up and result in ameliorating global poverty. Still, there are some room to improve the situation. Thus, people can expect better life in the future.
